Jasey was quickly beginning to resent every acquaintance she'd ever made, as they all seemed to have a penchent for being tardy. She was also resenting her best friend, her boss, and his little sister, as they were either too wrapped up in another person to notice the clock or simply apathetic. She was also resenting her own strange sense of punctuality and the terrible idea to invite Dakota a few minutes early so that they could chat as things were awkward.
She tapped her finger on the table that sat between the two of them.
"I'll be right back," she said through a tight smile as she stood and made her way to the door of the stairway.
She climbed the stairs, fuming, and pounded on the door to her friends' apartment.
"Emma, you're a terrible best friend!" she shouted through an exaggerated whine.
The door opened quickly, causing her to almost stumble over the threshold, and she was met by the large eyes of a petite teenager who could have been a doppelganger for Twiggy, and who definitely tried to be so.
"Lu," Jasey smiled, "are Emma and Jude coming down soon?"
"I don't know," Lu said. "I don't really want to check."
Jasey sighed then asked, "Well, would you mind coming down and keeping me and my friend some company?"
"Yes, because all I want is to play third wheel to yet another couple," Lu said in a quiet monotone, her facial expression never changing since the moment she'd open the door.
Jasey reached into her pocket and pulled out five dollars, "Here's this. I'll double it when you follow through."
Lu snatched it from Jasey's hand.
"Thank you!" Jasey grabbed her in a hug and rushed back downstairs.
Lu was cold on her heels and stepped into the cafe after Jasey had already sat back at the table with Dakota.
Interesting! Good writing.
