Part of Jasey was a little bit scared he wouldn't show. Another part of her was a little bit hopeful at the thought of his abandonment. It was intimidating to think that a) he was eight years older than her - new to his thirties when she'd only been in her twenties for a little over three years - and especially b) that he'd not only been married before, but also, as it seemed, extremely in love and expecting a child, and was now a widower. Mostly, though, she was intrigued and anxious with anticipation of finding out more about him. She hadn't had a decent date in a long time. And, the guys her mother always sent her way rarely got along with her friends. She was curious to see how well he mixed with them.
So, she sat at a table in the cafe at six'o'eight pm, slightly tired from decorating and setting things up and a little sweatier than she'd prefer to be.
He strolled up to the cafe a minute later, a bottle of wine in hand, and smiled nervously when his eyes found hers.
She was prettier today than she had been yesterday. He remembered thinking that she was cute when she was bored at the counter, beautifully compellingly when she was frightened by the ruffians who were threatening the cafe, and adorable when she had her forehead scrunched in thought while she pondered over his certificate. But, today, dressed in rolled up denim shorts, a red and white striped fitted tee, a cream vest, and white canvas shoes, she looked beautiful. Her brown hair fell in soft waves on her shoulders, her blue eyes shone brightly with excitement, and her lips looked full, even when stretched in a smile. Not to mention, her cheeks were a tad flushed and her face had a lovely sheen to it. Suddenly, he found a knot in his throat and gulped it down. Yesterday, her personality had refreshed him and he knew he wanted to spend time with her, but now the idea made him even more nervous. He hadn't been attracted to anyone in the ten years he'd been alone, so he'd also never attempted spending time with a woman in all that time. He started feeling like a gawky teenager. His confidence was shot. He didn't like it. But, he did like Jasey.
"Don't you look handsom," she smiled and stood from her seat, and he realized he been standing there, staring, while silently processing the idea of her in his mind.
"Thank you," he blushed with a smile, his voice cracking, and he gulped again. "You, uh, you look great, too, as well, um..."
She smiled held her hand out to take the wine saying, "I'll put this in the cooler to chill."
